Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome, by History Hunters, tells about all of the things that the Romans did in their time period. Back then Romans believed in God, but a lot of Gods. Rome is in Italy followed by a couple more ancient cities. Also in their time they thought of richer and poorer people on different levels. The Roman army was the strongest army back then and nobody wanted to go against them. They would play games, but not normal games. The games were fighting against each other, and slaves fought in the Coliseum. They made buildings so strong they could survive 2,000 years. Ancient Rome was such a cool book because I love history and this is all about history. My favorite thing in the book was the Gods, they had so many gods. This book is really good because it tells you everything you need to know about Rome. This book made me want to learn about the Coliseum and which battles took place there. I enjoyed the trivia questions in this book because they were fun.

Max the Mighty

Max the Mighty, by Roman Philbrick, describes how Max tries to save a little girl named Worm / Rachel from a bad man. The main character, Max, is one of the tallest kids in the neighborhood, and everyone knows him because his dad is in prison for murder. Rachel gets the nickname Worm because she loves to read, and everyone in school calls her a bookworm. Max hears screaming and goes to check it out and finds out that Worm’s mom and Worm are being abused by Worm’s stepdad. Worm calls him the Undertaker. Max rescues the girl and checks if she's all right. Worm wants to go to Chivalry, Montana because apparently that's where her real dad lives. Max and Worm venture to Chivalry, Montana. Will they make it to Chivalry, Montana and escape The Undertaker? Now this book is one of my favorite books, but it is still behind the first Freak the Mighty book. There is a text to text connection in these two books. In Freak the Mighty, we find out that Max's dad hurt his mom. In Max the ...

The Popsicle Stick Bridge

"The Popsicle Stick Bridge," a short story by Marlane Kennedy, tells about Cassandra who loses her friend but gets a new one. Her teacher asks the class to partner up to make a bridge out of popsicle sticks. Normally she would ask her friend to be her partner, but her friend moved, so she is paired up with Robert. She didn't like that Robert had purple crusty jelly on his cheek, and she didn't want to work with him. Robert builds the popsicle bridge differently from everyone else, and Cassandra feels like he isn’t doing it the right way. After Cassandra and Robert win the competition, Cassandra realizes that Robert is smart and she was wrong to judge him. The short story “The Popsicle Bridge" was a fun and interesting story. The author did a great job showing Cassandra's feelings and thoughts in the story. After reading the story, I thought about how people can reach goals in different ways. The author did a good job showing Cassandra’s emotions. It was ea...

Man in the Red Bandanna, a short picture book, describes the heroic acts of one man on September 11th 2001. The main character is a man named wells. he worked at the WTC. on September 11th 2001 two planes crash into his building. Wells was a volunteer firefighters so he wanted to help people by guiding them to safety. However, the stairwells of the building were filled with smoke and some people were injured. He climbed back up the stairs and help multiple people reach safety he even carried some people. At the end was to not make it out of the building but he will always be remembered as the man in the red bandana. The man in the red bandana tells a great story and I do have a few questions. Wells the main character had some great Character traits. Also I learned a lesson Rose was one person but made a big difference on that day. Wells was very resilient and savior too many people. All in all those w...

The Night the Ghost Got In

“The Night the Ghost Got In,” a short story by James Thurber, describes how two boys react when they think a ghost is in the house. When one of the boys hears the noise, he comes to the stairs, and the noise continues to stop and start. Both boys come out and tell their mom about the noises that were happening downstairs. Mom immediately thinks that there are burglars downstairs and throws her shoe through the neighbors window, so the neighbors can call 911. The police come and they can't find anyone when they search the house. Someone hears something in the attic, so they go check. The grandfather is sleeping, and when they wake him up he steals a guy's gun and shoots one of the police officers by accident. I think the theme of this story is one misunderstanding can lead to many more in a couple minutes. And to me that theme is very very funny. This was one of the shortest books I've ever read but might be one of my favorite books now. I would definitely recommend this f...
Pax, by Sarah Pennypacker, tells about a boy named Peter trying to find his fox. Peter had to let his fox go into the wild because war was happening. His dad was going to drop Peter off at his Grandpa's house, but Peter had other plans. When he went to baseball practice, he ran away instead of going back home. He met a person named Vola and Peter learned that he had a broken foot. Vola helped him with his broken foot. Peter stayed with Vola, and she made him a cast and crutches. They became friends and Peter helped her get out of her house. Meanwhile, Pax found other foxes and starts running, swimming, and hunting. Eventually, Peter left to find Pax, and he searched the roads, the forest, and many other places. When he found the place that he was looking for, he tried to go in but there was a guard. The guard let him in and told him to stay in the forest, so that's what Peter did. At the end of the book, Peter finds Pax, but he leaves him in the wild. I chose this book beca...
